Cloud vs Desktop Copy Trading Software: How to Choose

Copy trading tools come in two shapes: software you install on a PC or rented server, and platforms that run fully in your browser. This page compares the two honestly — cost, uptime, speed, security and day-to-day effort — and shows what to check before you pay for either.

Nothing to installAll taxes includedFree 1-month trialTiming you can verify
In short
  • Desktop copy-trading software runs on your Windows PC — it stops when your PC sleeps, loses power or loses internet, so vendors usually recommend renting a cloud server (VPS) too, at an extra monthly cost.
  • Browser-based (cloud) copy trading needs no installation, no VPS and no maintenance, and works from any computer or phone.
  • Compare the TOTAL monthly cost: licence + taxes + static IP + VPS + paid add-ons. Prices that look similar rarely are.
  • Stocks Developer: free 1-month trial, then ₹295 to ₹495 per account per month, all taxes included, static IP from ₹100 — and a per-order timing report so you can verify copy speed yourself.
  • Tools only, either way: good copy trading software makes no trading decisions for you. You set up and control every copy.

Two ways to run copy trading

Copy trading tools for Indian markets come in two shapes:

  1. Desktop software — a program you download and install on a Windows computer. The program does the copying, so the computer must stay on, connected and awake for every minute of the trading day.
  2. Browser-based (cloud) platforms — nothing to install. You log in from a browser, and the copying runs on the platform’s servers, not on your machine.

Stocks Developer is browser-based. This page explains what that difference means for your money, your uptime and your peace of mind — and what to check before you pay for any tool, including ours.

What desktop software means day to day

Installed copy-trading software makes your own machine part of your trading system. That has real consequences:

  • Your PC becomes a single point of failure. A power cut, an internet drop, a Windows update or an accidental sleep stops your copying mid-session.
  • So vendors recommend a VPS. To avoid those risks, most desktop tools tell you to rent a cloud server (VPS) that stays on all day. That is an extra monthly bill — often more than the software licence itself — and one more machine to log into, patch and secure.
  • Updates are on you. Every new version means a fresh download and a manual reinstall on your machine — and on the VPS too, if you run one. Skip a few releases and you are trading on old software with old bugs.
  • It is usually Windows-only, on one machine. You cannot check or act from your phone; at best you remote-desktop into the machine.

None of this makes desktop software bad — it is how this category started, and it works when the machine is looked after. But the machine-minding is real work, and its cost rarely appears on the pricing page.

What browser-based means day to day

  • Nothing to install, nothing to maintain. Open the website, log in, trade. Our software runs on Google Cloud in its Mumbai, India region.
  • Your machine does not matter. Master-child copying runs in the background on our servers even when your own computer is off.
  • Works from anywhere. Any computer or phone with a browser.
  • A desktop-app feel, without the desktop app. Browser-based does not mean mouse-only. Keyboard shortcuts set the side, order type and price; an optional Keyboard mode moves through table rows and acts with single keys; and a Ctrl+K command box jumps to a symbol or prepares an order — so heavy users get desktop-software speed for data entry. Every order is shown for you to review and send; nothing is sent for you.
  • Always the latest version — we ship improvements almost daily. Our team installs every update on the cloud servers, so all users are on the newest version the moment it goes live. There is nothing for you to download or reinstall, ever — you simply open the site and the improvement is already there.
  • No VPS, ever. There is no extra server to rent, because there is nothing of yours that must stay on.

The hidden costs to add up

Two tools with similar headline prices can cost very different amounts per month. Before choosing any copy trading software, total these five lines:

  1. Licence per account — and whether the master account is billed too.
  2. Taxes — is GST included or added on top? Ours is included.
  3. Static IP — if your broker requires one. Ours is ₹100 (IPv6), ₹200 (standard IPv4) or ₹299 (premium IPv4 we set up for you) per month, taxes included — or free if you bring your own. Some tools charge up to ₹500 per account per month.
  4. VPS rent — desktop software usually needs one; browser-based never does.
  5. Paid add-ons — alert bridges, risk tools or APIs that cost extra elsewhere are included in every Stocks Developer plan.

With Stocks Developer the total is simply the licence (₹295 to ₹495 per account per month, dropping automatically as your lifetime bill grows) plus the small static IP add-on if your broker needs one. Nothing else.

Speed — and how to verify it

Speed claims in this category are easy to make and hard to check. Our approach is to show you the measurement:

  • PMS copy places the order from our terminal into all chosen accounts, so there is almost no lag. It is the fastest way to copy.
  • Master-child copy waits for your broker to report the new master order, then copies it. On high-performance brokers, copying starts in under 0.2 seconds; on the rest it starts between 0.5 and 4 seconds, depending on how fast the broker notifies us.
  • Our own processing adds almost nothing. Measured across live production orders, the typical (median) time our platform adds to a copied order is under 25 milliseconds. On our IPv6 static-IP network, 9 out of 10 orders complete the full round trip to the broker in under 100 milliseconds.
  • Every copied order has a Copy Log with a stage-by-stage timing breakdown that separates our system’s time from your broker’s time. Whatever any tool promises — including us — insist on per-order timing you can read yourself, and test during live market hours.

Security in both models

Desktop tools often lead with “your API credentials stay on your machine.” That is true — until the software is moved to a rented VPS, where the credentials sit on a cloud machine you must secure yourself.

Our model keeps you in control a different way: API credentials are stored only in encrypted form on servers in India; where your broker supports it you log in on the broker’s own page (OAuth) so we never see those credentials at all; your login is protected by two-factor authentication; your portfolio data is never stored in a database, never analyzed, and never visible to our employees; and the account owner has a Kill Switch that stops all activity instantly. Every action the system takes is recorded in an activity log you can search — the only record we keep, for a limited period, and one you can read yourself.

How to choose

Pick desktop software if you are certain you want API credentials only on hardware you own, and you are ready to keep that machine powered, connected, patched and secure through every trading day — or to pay for and manage a VPS.

Pick a browser-based platform if you want copying that does not depend on your own machine, works from anywhere, has no server to rent, and costs a known, tax-inclusive amount per month.

Either way, it is your trading: Stocks Developer is a tools-only platform. It gives no advice and makes no trading decisions for you — you set up and control every copy, and you can stop it at any time. The easiest way to decide is to test with real accounts: every new account gets a free 1-month full-feature trial, on every broker.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better: cloud or desktop copy trading software?

For most traders, a browser-based (cloud) platform is the safer choice: there is nothing to install or maintain, your copying does not depend on your own PC staying on, it works from a phone, and there is no extra server to rent. Desktop software can suit someone who insists on keeping API credentials only on a machine they own — but then the machine's power, internet and updates become their responsibility, and running it on a rented server gives up that one advantage anyway.

Do I need a VPS for copy trading?

Only if you use desktop copy-trading software. Because a desktop program stops working the moment the PC sleeps or loses internet, vendors of installed software usually recommend renting a cloud server (VPS) that stays on all day, which typically adds a four-figure amount in rupees to your monthly bill. With a browser-based platform like Stocks Developer there is nothing to keep running — our servers do the copying, so you never need a VPS.

What is the real total cost of copy trading software?

Add up five things: the per-account licence, taxes (some tools add 18% GST on top of the advertised price), the static IP charge if your broker needs one (up to ₹500 per month at some tools), the VPS rent if the software is installed, and paid add-ons such as an alerts bridge or risk tools. At Stocks Developer the licence is ₹295 to ₹495 per account per month with all taxes already included, a static IP is ₹100 to ₹299 per month (or free if you bring your own), there is no VPS, and every feature is included in one price.

How can I verify a copy trading platform's speed instead of trusting its claims?

Ask for measured, per-order timing — not a marketing number. Stocks Developer shows a Copy Log for every copied order with a stage-by-stage timing breakdown that separates the time our system took from the time your broker took. Test during live market hours with a real order and read the numbers yourself. On our platform, PMS copy has almost no lag, and master-child copying starts in under 0.2 seconds on high-performance brokers and between 0.5 and 4 seconds on the rest.

Is my account safer with software installed on my own computer?

Not automatically. Installed software keeps your API credentials on your machine — but if you then run it on a rented VPS, your credentials sit on a rented cloud machine you must secure yourself. Stocks Developer stores API credentials only in encrypted form on servers in India, supports login on your broker's own page (OAuth) where available, protects your login with two-factor authentication, never stores your portfolio data, and gives the account owner a Kill Switch to stop everything instantly.

Can I try copy trading software before paying?

You should — and with us you can. Every new account on Stocks Developer gets a free 1-month full-feature trial, on every broker, so you can set up copying and verify speed and behaviour with your own accounts before paying anything. Many tools in this category offer no trial, or take payment first with limited or no refunds, so check the trial and refund terms before you commit.
