Freeze limit not found (Quantity calculation failed)

In short

Your order was not placed because Split Order is set to AUTO. AUTO needs to know the largest quantity allowed in one order for that contract, and for some contracts we do not have that number. The fix is to set Split Order to NO on the Trade screen, under Advanced. Your quantity is not the problem — this error also comes for a single lot. If your quantity really is very large, choose QTY instead and set your own slice quantity.

When this happens

  1. 1 Split Order is set to AUTO, and the largest allowed order quantity is not known for that contract.
  2. 2 This is most common on futures and options contracts.

What this error means

Every futures and options contract has a limit on how much quantity you can send in one order. When Split Order is set to AUTO, we look up that limit and cut your order into smaller orders that stay inside it.

For some contracts we do not have that limit on record. AUTO then has no number to work with, so the order is stopped before it is sent.

Your quantity is not the problem. This error comes even when you order a single lot.

How to fix it

On the Trade screen:

  1. Click Advanced.
  2. Set Split Order to NO.
  3. Place the order again.

With NO, your order is sent as one order.

If your quantity is very large

Use QTY instead of NO:

  1. Click Advanced.
  2. Set Split Order to QTY.
  3. Enter your own Slice Qty — this is how much goes in each smaller order.

Keep the slice quantity inside the limit your broker allows for that contract. If it is too high, the order comes back as Quantity higher than Maximum (Freeze Limit).

How to stop it from happening again

The Trade screen starts with whatever you have saved as your default. To change it, go to Settings → General → Trading and set Default Split Type to NO. Every new order form then starts with splitting off.

This is not the same as “Quantity higher than Maximum”

The two errors sound alike but need opposite fixes.
