Invalid Totp

In short

Your broker's server returns the Invalid TOTP error when the TOTP generated by AutoTrader Web does not match. The usual cause is a wrong TOTP Key saved on your trading account. Open Accounts -> Trading Accounts, edit the account, and enter the correct TOTP Key. Another common cause is not finishing TOTP setup on the broker: people copy the TOTP Key into our system but never complete the activation on the broker's screen, so TOTP is never switched on. If your broker no longer shows the TOTP Key, disable TOTP on the broker and enable it again to get a fresh key, then copy that key into our system. If the key is correct, report the problem to us.

When this happens

  1. 1 The TOTP Key entered while adding the account in AutoTrader Web is incorrect. The TOTP Key is the value used to generate the TOTP.
  2. 2 TOTP setup was not finished on the broker. The TOTP Key was copied into our system, but the activation screen on the broker was closed or left without completing, so TOTP is never switched on at the broker.
  3. 3 You no longer have the correct TOTP Key. Some brokers show the TOTP Key only once, during the TOTP setup, and hide it afterwards.
  4. 4 Your broker's server is not following accurate standard internet time.

TOTP Key is not the 6-digit TOTP

Many users mix up these two things, and that causes this error:

  • The TOTP Key (also called a Secret Key or Seed) is a unique, secret string of characters, normally 10-20 characters long. It is shared only between a service (your broker, bank or email provider) and your authenticator app (such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator). Your broker shows it when you first set up TOTP. This is what you enter in our system.
  • The TOTP is the 6-digit code your authenticator app shows. It changes every 30 seconds and is generated from the TOTP Key.

Do not enter the 6-digit code as the TOTP Key. Enter the longer secret string (the TOTP Key) instead.

Solution

  1. Make sure your TOTP Key is correct. Go to the menu (Accounts -> Trading Accounts) and edit your trading account.
  2. If your TOTP Key is correct, please report this problem to us.

Did you finish TOTP setup on the broker?

This is a very common mistake. When you enable TOTP on the broker, the broker shows the TOTP Key on a setup screen. Many users copy that key into our system but then close or leave the broker’s screen without finishing the setup. Most brokers ask you to confirm a 6-digit code on that screen to switch TOTP on. If you skip this step, TOTP is never activated on the broker, and every login shows the Invalid TOTP error — even though the TOTP Key you saved is correct.

To fix it:

  1. Log in to your broker and open the TOTP (two-factor) setup again.
  2. Complete the setup fully — enter the 6-digit code the broker asks for and confirm, so TOTP shows as enabled on the broker.
  3. Make sure the TOTP Key saved in our system matches this setup. If you set it up fresh, copy the new key into AutoTrader Web and click Validate & Save.

If your broker does not show the TOTP Key

Some brokers show the TOTP Key only once, at the time you set up TOTP, and hide it afterwards. If you do not have the correct key saved, you cannot just read it again from the broker.

In this case:

  1. Log in to your broker and disable TOTP on your broker account.
  2. Enable TOTP again. During this fresh setup, the broker shows a new TOTP Key.
  3. Copy this new TOTP Key.
  4. In AutoTrader Web, go to Accounts -> Trading Accounts, edit your account, paste the new TOTP Key, and click Validate & Save.

Note: If your broker is Dhan, this error is usually a temporary problem on Dhan’s side, not a wrong key. See Dhan login errors instead.
