How do I see, change, exit or stop watching an AT_BO or AT_CO?

In short
  • Everything is on the Positions tab, on one control.
  • The AT_BO or AT_CO pill sits next to the symbol. Solid means your entry filled and your levels are being watched, and your stop-loss is printed next to it.
  • Click the pill to see your entry price, target, stop-loss, trailing step, where the stop-loss is kept, and the square-off time.
  • Modify changes your levels — type the price you want, not a distance. Any box you leave empty is left alone.
  • Remove protection stops us watching one or more of your levels. It does not close your position.
  • Exit now closes at the market price straight away, or cancels the entry order if it has not filled. The pill on Orders is view-only.

When this happens

  1. 1 Not knowing where the target and stop-loss are shown, because a bracket does not appear as separate target and stop-loss orders in the order book.
  2. 2 Expecting Remove protection to close the position, when it only stops the watching and leaves the position open.

Your target and stop-loss for an AT_BO or AT_CO are not separate orders in your order book, so there is nothing to look for there. They live on one control on the Positions tab.

Finding it

  1. Go to Trading → Portfolio, then the Positions tab.
  2. Find the position. Next to its symbol you will see a small AT_BO or AT_CO pill with a little arrow (▾) on it.
  3. Click the pill. The row opens underneath and shows everything.

The arrow is there to tell you the pill opens something — it is a button, not just a label.

Reading the pill without clicking

What you seeWhat it means
A solid pillYour entry has filled and your levels are being watched.
A faded pillYour entry has not filled yet, so nothing is protected yet.
SL 1,238.00 next to the pillYour live stop-loss. It is printed there on purpose, so the one number that decides how much the position can lose is readable at a glance.
A Closed pillThis bracket has already finished today. Next to it is what happened — for example Target hit — exited at 1,227.70, or Squared off at 3:00 PM.

1. Seeing your target and stop-loss

Click the pill. The panel shows:

LineWhat it tells you
StatusWhether your levels are being watched, or still waiting for your entry to fill.
QuantityHow much is covered. Once your entry fills, this is what actually traded.
EntryThe price your entry filled at — the price your levels are measured from.
TargetYour target, as a price.
Stop-lossYour stop-loss, as a price.
TrailingYour step size, if you set one.
Stop heldWhere your stop-loss actually is right now.
Squares offThe time this position is closed for you, because it is an intraday order.

Before your entry fills there are no prices yet, so the target and stop-loss are shown as the distances you asked for instead.

“Stop held” is worth reading. It tells you one of four things: your stop-loss is resting at your broker as a real order; it is on its way to your broker once your entry order finishes; it is being watched by us because that is what you chose; or it is being watched by us because something went wrong with the order at your broker. The last one is highlighted and says what happened — it matters, because it means nothing is waiting at your broker any more.

“Squares off” is the time this ends by itself. These are intraday orders, so the position is closed for you a short while before the market closes for that instrument. The exact time is not the same for every instrument, so it is shown here rather than left for you to remember. If your entry has not filled by then, the waiting order is cancelled instead.

If you changed your levels yourself, the panel says so.

The same pill and panel also appear on the Orders tab, against the order that started the bracket. There it is for looking only. The buttons below are on the Positions tab, because once your entry has filled the question is “what is protecting my position?”, not “what did I send?“.

2. Changing your target or stop-loss

Click the pill, then Modify.

  • You type the price you want, not a distance. Your entry price is shown at the top, and each box tells you how far the price you typed is from it.
  • Any box you leave empty is left alone. Modify never removes a level — use Remove protection for that.
  • Moving your stop-loss to your entry price, so the trade can no longer lose, is allowed.
  • If your stop-loss is held at your broker, the trailing step box is switched off and says why: a stop-loss kept at your broker stays at one price.

A trailing stop is never loosened. If you try to move it further away than it has already trailed to, we keep the tighter one and tell you.

If your stop-loss is held at your broker, changing the level changes that order at your broker too. If your broker refuses the change, your old stop-loss stays exactly where it was and we tell you it did not go through — you are never left with no stop-loss because a change failed.

3. Exiting the position

Click the pill, then Exit now.

  • If your entry has filled, your position is closed at the market price, straight away. You are asked to confirm, and it cannot be undone.
  • If your entry has not filled yet, there is nothing to close. The waiting entry order is cancelled instead and the bracket ends. The button says so before you confirm.

You can also square off a bracketed position with the normal Sq-off (Market) button, along with any other positions you select. Either way the bracket is closed properly and nothing is left waiting at your broker.

4. Stopping us watching, without closing the position

This is Remove protection — click the pill, then that button.

It does not close your position. The confirmation spells out exactly what you will be left holding, because this is the one button people misread. Your position stays open; only what is watching it changes.

You choose what to drop:

ChoiceWhat is left
Target onlyYour stop-loss keeps working. An AT_BO now behaves like an AT_CO.
Stop-loss onlyYour target keeps working, with nothing limiting your loss.
Stop trailingYour stop-loss stays exactly where it has trailed to, and stops moving.
EverythingThe position is left unmanaged — no target, no stop-loss, nothing watching.

You only see the choices that apply to your order.

After Everything, the position is an ordinary position. It is yours to manage, and you should still expect it to be closed at the intraday square-off time, because it was placed as an intraday order.

If instead you cancelled a stop-loss order at your broker by hand, you do not need this button — we notice, keep protecting you at the same level, and email you. Remove protection is the clear way to say you want no stop-loss at all.

After it closes

A bracket that has finished today keeps a Closed pill on the position, in different colours from a live one, with the outcome next to it. Click it to see what happened — the outcome, your levels, and the price. There are no buttons on a closed bracket, because there is nothing left to act on.
