Why does the same overnight position show a different profit on each broker?
- This only affects positions you hold overnight. A trade you open and close on the same day shows the same profit on every broker.
- A few brokers do not keep the price you originally traded at. At the end of each day they reset it to that day's closing price.
- So on those brokers the profit shown is today's change, not your gain or loss since you opened the position.
- The brokers affected are Finvasia (Shoonya), Flattrade, PL India, Profitmart, Tradejini and Zebu.
- The number is not wrong, it measures a different thing. The average price and the profit shown always agree with each other.
When this happens
- 1 The position is being carried from an earlier day. A position opened and closed on the same day is never affected.
- 2 Your broker resets the average price on a carried position to the day's closing price, and does not keep the price you originally traded at.
- 3 You are comparing the same trade across two brokers, and only one of them keeps your original price.
- 4 The position has been held for several days, so the closing price it was reset to is now far from the price you traded at.
The short answer
If you hold the same position through more than one broker, you may see two different profit figures for what is really the same trade.
Both figures are correct. They are measuring different things, because a few brokers do not keep the price you originally traded at.
At the end of each day, those brokers reset the average price on a carried position to that day’s closing price. The original price is gone from their records, so the profit they report from then on is today’s change, not your gain or loss since you opened the position.
This only happens on positions held overnight
Worth saying clearly, because it is the part that decides whether this affects you at all:
- If you open and close a position on the same day, nothing here applies. Every broker shows the same profit.
- It only starts once a position is carried into the next day.
So a purely intraday trader will never see this.
Which brokers
These brokers reset the average price on a carried position:
- Finvasia (including Shoonya)
- Flattrade
- PL India
- Profitmart
- Tradejini
- Zebu
On every other broker we support, the average price and the profit are measured from the price you actually traded at.
An example
You buy a futures contract at ₹290. It closes that day at ₹291. The next day it is trading at ₹298.
| Most brokers | The brokers listed above | |
|---|---|---|
| Average price shown | ₹290 (what you traded at) | ₹291 (that day’s closing price) |
| Profit shown | ₹8 (since you opened it) | ₹7 (today’s change) |
The longer you hold the position, the further the two can drift apart, because the closing price it is reset to keeps moving while your original price does not.
Is the number wrong?
No. It measures a different thing.
Notice in the example that the average price and the profit agree with each other. ₹298 minus ₹291 is ₹7. The figure is internally consistent, it is simply measuring from the closing price instead of from your entry.
This is the same distinction as M2M and PnL: today’s change versus your total since you opened the position. On these brokers, a carried position only has the first of the two available.
Why we do not correct it ourselves
We show you what your broker reports, and we do not invent a price the broker no longer has.
We could try to remember your original price ourselves, but it would not be reliable. If you opened a position directly in your broker’s own app, we would have no record of the price you traded at, so some positions would be measured one way and some another, with nothing on the screen to tell you which. One consistent figure is better than a mixture.
What to do
Nothing needs fixing on your side.
- If you are watching today’s movement, the figure on these brokers is already exactly that.
- If you want your total since you opened the position, work it from the price on your own contract note or order history for that trade.
