Why does my day PnL keep changing after I square off?

In short
  • It counts only today's trades. The quantity you carried from an earlier day is not part of it.
  • Closing a carried position leaves an open leg in that view, so the number keeps moving even when your position is zero.
  • Your profit and loss are correct. Only this one figure is easy to misread.
  • Net · AT PnL is your total profit or loss on the trade.
  • Net · M2M is your real profit or loss for the day, measured from the previous day's closing price.
  • It can show a dash (—) when your broker does not send a separate day view.

When this happens

  1. 1 The figure counts only the trades done today, not the quantity carried from an earlier day.
  2. 2 Closing a carried position leaves that carried quantity showing as an open leg in the day view.
  3. 3 An open leg is valued at the live price, so the figure keeps moving through the day.
  4. 4 The day view comes from your broker, and not every broker sends one.

The short answer

On the Summary tab you will see a figure called Today’s trades · AT PnL. It was earlier labelled Day · AT PnL.

It is not your profit or loss for the day. It counts only the trades you did today. Anything you carried from an earlier day is left out of it.

That is fine while you are only trading intraday. It becomes confusing on the day you close a position you were carrying.

An example

Say you are carrying 100 quantity from the previous day. Today you buy 200 more, and then you sell all 300.

Your position is now zero. But look at today’s trades on their own:

Quantity
Bought today200
Sold today300
Difference100 sold, not bought back

The 100 you carried was bought yesterday, so it is not counted on the buy side today. That leaves 100 looking like an open sold quantity in the day view, and an open quantity is valued at the live price.

So the figure keeps moving up and down with the market, even though you hold nothing.

Which number should I look at?

NumberWhat it tells you
Net · AT PnLYour total profit or loss on the trade. This is the one that matches your broker app.
Net · M2MYour real profit or loss for the day, measured from the previous day’s closing price.
Today’s trades · AT PnLOnly the trades done today, valued at the live price.

If you carried a position into today, Net · M2M is the number you want for “how did I do today”. It will differ from your total, and that is correct: profit or loss earned before today is not part of today.

Why it works this way

Your broker sends us two views of your positions:

  • a net view, which is everything you hold, including what you carried, and
  • a day view, which is only what you traded today.

The day view is the broker’s own figure. We show it as it is, rather than changing it, because brokers do not all build it the same way.

Not every broker sends a day view at all. When yours does not, this figure shows a dash (—) instead of a number. A dash means “your broker does not report this”, not “your profit or loss is zero”.
