Zerodha: update your registered IP addresses to the new pair
- Replace every address in your Kite Connect app's IP list with the two we show you. Both the primary and the backup are needed.
- Zerodha's list holds only two addresses, so the old one has to be removed to make room.
- Do it when the market is closed, then press Confirm as soon as you have saved it at Zerodha.
- Between removing the old address and pressing Confirm, your orders will not go through.
- Use the copy buttons. Please do not type the addresses by hand.
- We check both addresses with Zerodha for you and tell you if anything is wrong.
What you are being asked to do
If you have a Zerodha account with a static IP from us, you may see a box on the account screen headed “Action needed: update the IP addresses at your broker”.
It shows three things:
- the address currently registered with Zerodha, marked to be removed
- your primary address
- your backup address
Your job is to go into your Zerodha Kite Connect app, remove what is in the IP list today, and put those two addresses in instead.
Why both addresses are needed
Your static IP from us is not one address, it is a pair: a primary and a backup. The backup is included free.
We normally use the primary. If it is ever unavailable, we use the backup. Zerodha checks the address on every request, so if the backup is not on your list, orders sent from it are rejected. That is why both must be registered, even though only one is used most of the time.
Before you start
- Do it when the market is closed. There is a short gap during this change when orders will not go through. Doing it outside market hours means that gap costs you nothing.
- Have both steps ready to do together. Update Zerodha and press Confirm in the same sitting. Do not update Zerodha and leave the Confirm for the next day.
- Please get both addresses right the first time. Zerodha may not let you change this list again straight away, so a mistake can leave you waiting.
Step by step
- In AutoTrader Web, go to Accounts -> Trading Accounts and click the EDIT icon next to your Zerodha account.
- Find the box headed “Action needed: update the IP addresses at your broker”.
- Click the copy button next to the primary address. Do not type it by hand: these addresses are long, and a single wrong character makes Zerodha reject it.
- Open your Zerodha Kite Connect app settings, where your API key is.
- Remove every address already in the IP list. The list only holds two entries, so the old address must go to make room for both of ours.
- Paste in the primary address, then go back, copy the backup address, and paste that in too. Save.
- Come back to AutoTrader Web and press “I have updated it at my broker”.
We then check both addresses with Zerodha and show you the result within a few seconds.
What each result means
Green: your account is working. Both addresses were accepted. Zerodha now recognises your account by its own addresses and the old one is no longer used. Nothing more to do. You can remove the old address from anywhere you have noted it down.
Amber: working, but one address is missing. One of the two was accepted and your account is trading again on that one, but the other is not registered yet. Add the missing address, shown in the message, when you next get the chance. Until you do, orders can be rejected on the occasions we have to use it.
Red: your broker did not accept the addresses. Nothing was changed on our side. If you have already removed the old address at Zerodha, your orders will not go through until this is fixed. The message names the address Zerodha said it saw, so compare that with what you registered, correct it, and press Confirm again.
“We could not complete the check just now.” We could not reach Zerodha to check. Nothing was changed. If you have already updated the addresses at Zerodha, orders will not go through until the check passes, so please try again in a few minutes.
Why my orders stop working in the middle
This is the one part worth understanding, because it explains the timing advice above.
Until now, we told Zerodha to expect a different address for your account, and that address is the one sitting in your IP list today. The moment you remove it, Zerodha no longer recognises what we are sending, so it rejects everything.
Pressing Confirm is what switches us over to your real addresses. So the gap is only between removing the old address and pressing Confirm. Done in one sitting with the market closed, it is a couple of minutes and affects nothing.
This is also why you should not update Zerodha and then leave it. If you walk away without pressing Confirm, your account stays unable to trade.
Why we are making this change
Until now the address registered with Zerodha was not the address your orders actually came from. It worked, but it meant the static IP you were paying for was not really the one in use.
After this change, the address registered with Zerodha is the address your account genuinely uses. That is the whole point: what you register is what you use.
If you get stuck
Press Confirm again first. Most failures are a copied address that did not paste fully, or only one of the two addresses being saved at Zerodha.
If it still will not go through, message us on WhatsApp with your account’s login id and a screenshot of the IP list in your Kite Connect app, and we will check it with you.
