Zerodha: The user is not enabled for the app

In short

This Zerodha error means the API key you entered does not belong to the Zerodha account you are trying to validate. Every app you create on the Kite developer console is mapped to one Zerodha Client ID, and its API key works only for that one account. You see this error when the API key was created for a different Zerodha account — for example you copied the key from another of your accounts, or you typed the wrong client id while creating the app. It is not an API-access switch on your Zerodha account, and Zerodha support does not need to enable anything. To fix it: open your app on developers.kite.trade, check that its Zerodha Client ID exactly matches the login id of the account you are adding, correct the app (or create a new app with the right client id), then enter that app's API key and secret in AutoTrader Web and validate again.

When this happens

  1. 1 The API key belongs to a different Zerodha account — it was copied from another account's app.
  2. 2 The Zerodha Client ID entered while creating the app on the Kite developer console is wrong or has a typo.

What this error means

When you create an app on the Kite developer console, you must enter a Zerodha Client ID. Zerodha maps that app — and its API key — to that one account. The API key works only for that account.

This error means the login id of the account you are validating does not match the Zerodha Client ID of the app whose API key you entered. In simple words: this API key does not belong to this Zerodha account.

This is not about enabling API access on your Zerodha account. There is no such switch to turn on, and you do not need to ask Zerodha support to enable anything. The fix is in your own app setup, shown below.

Why this happens

  • You have more than one Zerodha account and copied the API key and secret from an app that was created for a different account.
  • While creating the app, you typed the wrong client id (or made a typo) in the Zerodha Client ID field.

How to fix it

  1. Log in to the Kite developer console: https://developers.kite.trade/apps.
  2. Open your app and check the Zerodha Client ID on it.
  3. It must exactly match the login id of the Zerodha account you are adding in AutoTrader Web.
  4. If it does not match, correct the client id on the app. If the console does not let you change it, create a new app with the correct client id — see How to get the API Key and API Secret.
  5. In AutoTrader Web, go to Accounts -> Trading Accounts, click the pencil icon next to the account’s login id, and enter the API Key and API Secret from the app that carries this account’s client id.
  6. Click Validate, then Save.

One app per Zerodha account

If you use more than one Zerodha account, each account needs its own app on the Kite developer console, created with that account’s client id. You cannot share one API key across Zerodha accounts. Keep each account’s API key and secret paired with the right account in AutoTrader Web.
