Insufficient margin

Insufficient margin
You get the "Insufficient margin" error when your account does not have enough funds to meet the margin requirement of the order you just placed. To fix it, add more funds, cancel open orders you do not need, or pledge shares to get a collateral margin.
When this happens
- 1 Insufficient funds in your account.
- 2 Your existing positions and open orders have already used up a lot of margin.
- 3 The broker increased the margin requirement because the market is expected to be highly volatile.
What this error means
This error appears when there are not enough funds in your account to meet the margin requirement of the order you just entered. The broker rejects the order because the available margin is lower than what the order needs.
How to fix it
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| Add funds | Add more money to your trading account. |
| Free up margin | Cancel open orders you do not need so their blocked margin is released. |
| Use collateral | Pledge shares to get a collateral margin. |
If you want to check how much margin your account currently has, see Margins or the Read margins API. To review your open orders before cancelling, see Orders.
