Motilal Oswal login errors (Two Factor Authentication Failed, ApiSecretKey invalid, Invalid UserId or Password)

In short
  • Two Factor Authentication Failed means Motilal Oswal did not accept the two-factor check. Only two saved values are used for it: your Date of Birth and your TOTP Key.
  • Check the Date of Birth first. It must be the date of birth registered with Motilal Oswal, typed as dd/mm/yyyy with the day first. 9 March 1985 is 09/03/1985.
  • Month first is the most common mistake. 03/09/1985 is 3 September, so it saves without a warning and Motilal Oswal then rejects the login.
  • Then check the TOTP Key. Copy it again from the Motilal Oswal API portal, under My APIs. It is a long secret string, not the 6-digit code.
  • ApiSecretKey is Invalid In Header Parameter and Invalid UserId Or Password are different errors. Correct the API secret key, or the user id and password.
  • Fix any of them the same way: Accounts -> Trading Accounts, edit the account, correct the value, then click Validate & Save.

When this happens

  1. 1 The Date of Birth saved for the Motilal Oswal account is not the date of birth registered with Motilal Oswal.
  2. 2 The Date of Birth is typed in the wrong order. It must be dd/mm/yyyy, so 9 March 1985 is 09/03/1985. If you type the month first, 03/09/1985 is still a real date, so it saves without a warning and Motilal Oswal rejects it.
  3. 3 The Date of Birth is typed in the wrong format, such as 9/3/1985, 09-03-1985 or 1985/03/09. Our screen refuses these when you save and asks for DD/MM/YYYY.
  4. 4 The TOTP Key saved for the Motilal Oswal account is wrong, or the 6-digit code was entered instead of the long TOTP Key.
  5. 5 The API secret key saved for the Motilal Oswal account is wrong.
  6. 6 The user id or password saved for the Motilal Oswal account is wrong.

Errors

This page covers these Motilal Oswal login errors:

  • Two Factor Authentication Failed.
  • ApiSecretKey is Invalid In Header Parameter.
  • Invalid UserId Or Password.

Each one points to a different value saved on your account, so read the section for the error you got.

Two Factor Authentication Failed

This is the two-factor step of the Motilal Oswal login, and Motilal Oswal did not accept it.

Only two values saved on your account are used for this step:

  1. Your Date of Birth
  2. Your TOTP Key

So one of those two is wrong. The other values saved on the account are not used for this check, and a mistake in them shows a different message.

Check the Date of Birth first. It is wrong far more often than the TOTP Key, and it is quicker to check.

Step 1: Check the Date of Birth

  1. Go to the menu (Accounts -> Trading Accounts).
  2. Click the small EDIT icon next to your Motilal Oswal account.
  3. Look at the Date of Birth field.
  4. It must be the date of birth registered with Motilal Oswal for this account, and it must be typed as dd/mm/yyyy — day first, then month, then the four-digit year.
  5. Correct it if needed, then click Validate & Save.

Write the day first. This is the mistake we see most often:

Your date of birthCorrectWrong
9 March 198509/03/198503/09/1985
25 December 197825/12/197812/25/1978

03/09/1985 means 3 September, which is a real date, so our screen accepts it and saves it. Motilal Oswal then compares it with your actual date of birth, does not find a match, and refuses the login. Nothing looks wrong on the screen, which is why this one is easy to miss.

Also use two digits for the day and the month, four for the year, and / between them. If you type 9/3/1985, 09-03-1985 or 1985/03/09, our screen refuses to save and tells you the date must be in DD/MM/YYYY format.

Step 2: Check the TOTP Key

If the Date of Birth is correct, the TOTP Key is the problem.

  1. Log in to the Motilal Oswal Trading API portal.
  2. On the dashboard, click My APIs.
  3. Copy the TOTP Key shown there.
  4. In AutoTrader Web, go to Accounts -> Trading Accounts, edit your Motilal Oswal account, paste it into the TOTP Key field, and click Validate & Save.

The TOTP Key is a long secret string. It is not the 6-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. Copy it exactly, with no spaces before or after it. More on this in Invalid TOTP.

If the Date of Birth and the TOTP Key are both correct and the error stays, please report it to us.

ApiSecretKey is Invalid In Header Parameter

Motilal Oswal did not accept the API secret key saved for your account.

  1. Go to the menu (Accounts -> Trading Accounts).
  2. Click the small EDIT icon next to your Motilal Oswal account.
  3. Correct the API Secret, and check the API Key next to it as well. Both come from your API on the Motilal Oswal portal, under My APIs.
  4. Click Validate & Save.

Invalid UserId Or Password

Motilal Oswal did not accept your login id or your password.

  1. Go to the menu (Accounts -> Trading Accounts).
  2. Click the small EDIT icon next to your Motilal Oswal account.
  3. Check the Login Id and the Password saved for this account, and correct them if they are wrong.
  4. Click Validate & Save.

If your password has expired, see Trading platform password expired.
