Upstox: Intraday buy orders can't be placed for options

In short
  • Upstox rejects intraday buy orders on stock options. The message comes from Upstox, not from AutoTrader Web.
  • Index options are fine. Intraday buys on index options such as NIFTY and BANKNIFTY are accepted.
  • AutoTrader bracket and cover orders handle it for you. On an Upstox stock option the entry goes as NORMAL, from the API, order window or alert. You change nothing.
  • They are still closed the same day. Target, stop-loss and trailing work as usual, and the position is squared off automatically before the market closes. It is not a delivery position.
  • Rejected before 9 October 2026? Those orders were placed before this was in place. Place them again; no change to your code is needed.
  • Your own regular orders: on a stock option, set product type to NORMAL instead of intraday.

When this happens

  1. 1 An intraday (MIS) buy order on a stock option was sent to Upstox, for example a regular order, an advanced order or an alert with product type INTRADAY.

You sent a buy order for an option to your Upstox account, and Upstox rejected it with “Intraday buy orders can’t be placed for options. Please place a delivery order.”

Why this happens

Upstox does not accept an intraday buy order on a stock option. The order was sent with product type intraday (MIS), so Upstox refused it.

This is Upstox’s own rule. Nothing is wrong with your account, your API key or your static IP.

Intraday buys on index options, such as NIFTY and BANKNIFTY, are accepted by Upstox.

AutoTrader bracket and cover orders

An AutoTrader bracket order (AT_BO) or cover order (AT_CO) on an Upstox stock option is sent to Upstox as NORMAL for you. This works the same whether you place it from the API (placeAutoTraderBracketOrder), the order window or an alert. You do not need to change anything in your call: placeAutoTraderBracketOrder has no product type setting, and none is needed.

Everything else stays the same. Your target, stop-loss and trailing stop work as usual, and the position is closed automatically shortly before the market closes, the same as any AutoTrader bracket order.

One thing is different. Upstox closes intraday positions itself at the end of the day, but it never closes a NORMAL one. So if the automatic close does not happen for any reason, we email you, and you should close the position yourself in your broker terminal. Otherwise it is carried to the next trading day.

Got this error on a bracket order before 9 October 2026? That order was placed before this was in place. Place it again; your code does not need to change.

If a bracket or cover order on an Upstox stock option still gets this error from 9 October 2026 onwards, contact our support team. There is nothing else for you to check or change.

Your own regular orders

If you place the order yourself, with Place Regular Order, Place Advanced Order, an alert or the order window, set the product type to NORMAL for a stock option on Upstox. Intraday will be rejected.
