Quarterly Settlement

Buy a liquid ETF with idle cash in many accounts before settlement, and sell it back in one go.

In short
  • One screen for all accounts. Every live trading account is listed with the cash it can use.
  • You choose the ETF and the amount. Pick an ETF, set a percentage, or type a rupee amount per account.
  • Pledged collateral is left out by default, because brokers usually do not let it pay for a delivery buy.
  • Buy in one click, sell in one click. Both tabs place real orders in every account you tick.
  • The next settlement date is shown on the screen. Buy before the market closes on the Friday.
  • This screen never buys or sells on its own. You place every order on it yourself.

The Quarterly Settlement screen helps you keep idle cash in your trading accounts, across many accounts and brokers, when your broker’s settlement date comes.

Open it from the menu: Trading → Quarterly Settlement.

What fund settlement is

On fixed dates, your broker must send the unused cash in your trading account back to your bank account. This happens once a month or once a quarter, whichever you chose with your broker. It is often called running account settlement.

Units of an ETF that you hold are not cash, so they are not sent back. Some traders buy a liquid ETF with their idle cash before the settlement date so the money stays in the account, and sell the units when they need the cash again. Whether you do this is your choice.

The screen shows the next settlement date at the top. Buy before the market closes on the Friday.

Buy tab: park the cash

Each row is one trading account.

ColumnMeaning
AccountThe nickname, with the broker and login id under it.
Available marginThe margin the broker says is available.
Pledged collateralThe value of shares you have pledged for margin.
Incl. collateralTick it to add the pledged collateral back into this account’s cash.
Cash that can be parkedAvailable margin minus pledged collateral (unless you ticked Incl. collateral).
Amount to park (₹)How much to spend in this account. You can type your own amount.
UnitsHow many ETF units that amount buys at the price shown.
StatusMessages for this account, and the result after you place the order.

The row at the bottom shows the totals for the accounts you have ticked.

To buy:

  1. Choose the ETF and check the price.
  2. Set Park % of cash (100 by default). It fills every row’s amount with that share of its cash. You can still change any row’s amount by hand.
  3. Tick the accounts you want to buy in.
  4. Click Buy, read the summary, then click Yes, place orders.

A little of each amount is kept aside for charges, so the order is not rejected for being a few rupees short.

Pledged collateral

Many brokers count the value of your pledged shares as available margin. Brokers usually do not let that value pay for a delivery buy, so by default the screen leaves it out. Tick Include pledged collateral for all accounts, or Incl. collateral on one row, only if you know your broker allows it.

For a few brokers, the pledged collateral is not reported separately. The row then shows not reported in the Pledged collateral column, and a warning in the Status column that the figure may include pledged shares. Check that account’s cash in your broker’s app before you buy.

Sell tab: get the cash back

When you want the cash back, open the Sell tab. Each row shows the Units held, the Pledged units, their Value, and the Units to sell.

Choose how much to sell in each account:

  • All units
  • Percentage of the units
  • Value (₹) per account

Then tick the accounts, click Sell, read the summary, and click Yes, place orders.

  • Pledged units are left out, because they cannot be sold until you unpledge them at your broker.
  • Units bought today show here from the next trading day.

After you place orders

These are real orders in each account you ticked, placed as delivery orders. The Status column shows each account’s result. Then check the Orders tab of the Portfolio to confirm that every order was filled.

This screen never places orders on its own. It does not buy before settlement or sell after it unless you click.

Frequently asked questions

Which accounts does the Quarterly Settlement screen show?▾

It lists your trading accounts that are live. If an account is missing, make it live, then reload the screen. If the broker does not answer for an account, its Status column shows a message instead of figures; click Refresh to try again.

Trading Accounts →

Why is the cash that can be parked lower than my available margin?▾

Because pledged collateral is taken out. Many brokers count the value of shares you have pledged as margin, but they usually do not let that value pay for a delivery buy, so an order sized on it would be rejected. If you know your broker allows it, tick Incl. collateral for that account, or tick the box at the top for all accounts.

Why can I not sell the units I bought today?▾

Units bought today show on the Sell tab from the next trading day, once they reach your holdings. Units you have pledged are also left out, because a broker will not sell pledged units until you unpledge them.

Will the ETF units be sold automatically after the settlement date?▾

No. This screen never buys or sells on its own. When you want the cash back, open the Sell tab, choose All units, a percentage or a rupee value, and place the sell orders yourself.
